| Children often demonstrate signs of difficulty adjusting to changes at home, with friends, in school, or following a significant life event. Reactions to change vary with each child, but many become agitated, depressed or anxious. For these children, SCCS offers the Early Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT) program for the purpose of detecting, as early as possible, and treating symptoms of struggles before problems escalate. The EPSDT program is offered in the child's school, home or community setting and provides individual and family therapy as well as behavior coaching for the participant and mentoring for the child's parents or guardians. As a parent or guardian, if you have noticed a significant difference in your child, it is often a good idea to involve a professional to determine if therapy may help your child get through these difficulties. Joshua was 8 years old and living in a car. He was going into dumpsters for food. His mother had lost her ability to support him. And his father had vanished from his life altogether. When he first was placed into South Coast’s program, he was aggressive, impulsive, frightened, and he acted out. It was obvious that he was very bright, but it was also obvious he had seen and experienced things a child should never be subjected to. Today, he is 15 years old. He has developed a deep appreciation for music. He’s setting goals for his life. He’s working very hard. And anyone who knew him before would hardly believe it is the same child.
